Emotional health means being able to regulate emotions and behavior under different circumstances. People, who are emotionally healthy, are able to handle life’s challenges well, build strong relationships and recover quickly from setbacks.

Emotional health refers to overall psychological wellbeing of a person. It implies how we feel about ourselves. It is about being happy, self-confident, self-aware, and resilient. It greatly influences our ability to manage our feelings and emotions. And, therefore, it helps deal more efficiently with difficulties.

Anyone can suffer from emotional health problems and over a lifetime most of us will. Majority of us ignore the emotional messages that tell us something is wrong with us. Connect with people – We humans are social creatures having overriding emotional need for positive connection with others. We are not meant to survive in isolation, let alone thrive. Interacting with another person can quickly put the brakes on stress and relax us. Find a supportive relationship with someone, who is a good listener. A good listener will listen to the feelings behind your words, and won’t interrupt, judge, or criticize you. Such supportive relationships help you strengthen emotionally. Don’t neglect your real-world relationships in favor of virtual interaction on TV or computer screens.

Get moving – The mind and the body are intrinsically linked. When you improve your physical health, you’ll automatically experience greater emotional well-being. Regular exercise also releases endorphins — powerful chemicals that lift your mood and provide added energy. Exercise also relieves stress, improves memory, and helps you to sleep better. You don’t have to be a fitness fanatic to reap the benefits. Even modest amounts of exercise can make a big difference to your emotional health.

Manage stress- We are mostly not aware how our daily life feels stressful unless stress becomes overwhelming, thereby affecting quality of our life. While social interaction and exercise are excellent ways to relieve stress, other stress management strategies can help you bring things back into emotional balance. Techniques such as mindfulness meditation, deep breathing, or progressive muscle relaxation can put the brakes on stress and bring your mind and body back into a state of balance.

Eat healthy diet – What you eat has a direct impact on how you feel. Wholesome meals give you more energy and help you look better, resulting in a boost to physical and emotional health, while unhealthy food can take a toll on your brain and mood.

Give joyously – There is an undisputed connection between social relationships and greater mental and emotional health. The greatest benefit of social connection stems from the acts of giving to others. By measuring hormones and brain activity when people are being helpful to others, the researchers have discovered that being generous delivers immense pleasure to the giver. Just as we’re hard-wired to be social, we’re also hard-wired to give to others.

Invest in self-care – Investing in self-care is as much about caring for others as it is for you. Go to a funny movie, take a walk on the beach, read a good book, or talk to a friend. Fun and play is not an indulgence but a necessity for emotional and mental health. Enjoy the beauty of nature. Simply walking through a garden can lower blood pressure and reduce stress. The same goes for strolling through an art gallery, hiking, or sitting on a beach. Spend some money and time in buying some good clothes and items for grooming. As a matter of fact, an investment in self-care will pay good dividends in terms of happiness.

Develop mindfulness – Mindfulness is a mental state achieved by focusing one’s awareness on the present moment. Simultaneously, we maintain a moment-by-moment awareness of our thoughts, feelings, bodily sensations and the surrounding environment. We do so non-judgmentally without attaching labels to anything. In fact, the practice of mindfulness in our daily activities gives us power to regulate our emotions, thereby enhancing emotional resilience.

Do meditations regularly – A new study from Michigan State University says that meditation can help tame your emotions even if you’re not a mindful person. Those, who practice meditations regularly, recover quickly after a disturbing event because they have developed the ability to regulate their emotions. But there is a caveat that one should practice meditations regularly for emotional health benefits.

Our emotional health is of paramount importance because our physical and mental health is closely associated with it. The above strategies are quite effective in improving our emotional health, if we employ them prudently in life.

How to Successfully Sell Medicare Plans

Potential sales people call my office every day and tell me they would like to start selling Medicare plans. They feel the senior market is the place to be and want to get started selling right away. Nine out of ten of these people do not even make it out of the first month. I am going to share what they do wrong and how you can avoid the pit falls that kept them from getting off the ground.

The following information I am sharing is based on my trial and errors selling Medicare and health plans for the last 14 years. I have also worked with hundreds of agents with an array of backgrounds and skill sets. Here is a summary of how you can get started and be successful in Medicare sales.

Insurance license and Errors and Omissions: You must have a valid insurance license in the state you plan to do business in. Many carriers will also require you to have E and O insurance. There are a number of E and O carriers. NAPA usually has good pricing which should be in the $500 to $600 a year range.

Education: One of the biggest mistakes made is that people try to sell Medicare Plans without understanding Medicare. You need to understand Medicare A and B before you can feel confident selling people plans to supplement their Medicare A and B coverage. Find a copy of the “Medicare and You” book and read it 2 or 3 times to get started. Then talk to someone who has been selling plans for at least a few years to get some real life explanations. There is also a number of presentations online that give a high level overview of original Medicare. These types of presentations will help you with the basics as well.

Company Appointments: You need to be appointed to sell at least 2 different companies that offer Medicare Advantage and Medicare supplement plans in the area you will be working in. As time goes on it will be helpful to be appointed with most if not all of them but that would be too overwhelming to start. Two companies will get it done in the beginning. Again, use the internet to get an idea of which companies are competitive in your area. There are also a number of Medicare Wholesales websites that will allow you to do basic comparisons in any given zip code.

When you get the company supplies, review the summary of benefits multiple times. You should be able to rattle off the copays and benefits off the top of your head. Go through the applications and know then from start to finish.

Consider using a whole seller, FMO or marketing organization: They are companies that have contracts with multiple insurance companies. You may be able to obtain all your different Medicare company insurance contracts through one of these organization.

Try to review some basic summaries to see who has the most competitive advantage plans and then call them to start the appointment process. For supplement plans, you can use the state insurance department website to find who has the best rates. (Rates are the key difference in supplement plans)

Lead Source: Once you have completed your company appointments, certifications and received the sales supplies, you need to find some leads. Many agents will try to rely on personal contacts and referrals. This is a great supplement to your business but will not be enough to keep you busy or pay our mortgage. You will need a primary lead source. I would suggest the following types.

Mailers: Use a mail house. You will pay about $400 per 1000 mailed and get a 3% response. This should buy you the mailers, the postage and the return cards to your mailbox or inbox for this price. If the mail house wants more money per 1000, find a different mail house.

Online Leads: You can purchase leads online. Warning: online leads can work great for the right person but can be a total waste for some. Talk to the online lead company to get suggestions. There are a lot of good pointers for online leads but that will need to be in my next article.

Supplement phone leads and Pre Set appointments: Supplement candidates can be legally called (assuming DNC guidelines are followed). You can pay companies to pre set supplement appointments for you but you cannot make an Advantage sale at those appointments. A good cost for pre set supplement appointments is $18 to $24 per appointment

Some agencies will provide you with leads at no cost but with a reduced commission. This can often be a good deal for many new people in the business, just make sure there are no other strings attached.

Understand the LIS and MSP programs in your state: This is one of the biggest mistakes new and experienced sales people make. They are not familiar with the different Rx and Medical help programs for seniors in their state. Knowing these programs can lead to many additional sales and can help you close your existing sales. You must know the income levels for your state. Drug and copay help programs can create a special election period to sign someone up for a plan outside of AEP.

Understand how full Medicaid works in conjunction with a supplement or Advantage plan: Most sales people have no clue when it comes to Medicaid interaction with original Medicare, Advantage plans and supplements. A lack of understanding by the agent will cost him/her a number of sales.

Be contracted to sell other lines of business: If you are working hard to run appointments, you will certainly see clients that are looking for other services as well such as Hospital Indemnity plans, Final Expense plans, Annuities, Dental and Vision benefits, etc. The more services you can provide the better you will do.

Effort, Persistency and tracking: Work hard to educate yourself as much as possible. Be persistent when working leads (polite but persistent) and understand that you will not get an appointment with everyone or close every sale. Be sure to track your appointments and clients. Keep a list of client and prospects and remember to stay in touch with them.

The Amazing Cardio Myth – Why Cardio is Quite Possibly the Most Overrated Way to Lose Fat

Before I get any hate mail or any rants and raves from people calling me an idiot, let me clarify. Cardio does work to lose fat. That’s obvious. Cardio is great for general health, heart health, and just getting you up off your butt. However, when it comes to losing fat quickly, especially for busy moms and dads, cardio workouts are very, very overrated. Is that sacrilegious for a personal trainer to say that cardio is overrated or doesn’t work?

I don’t think so. In my personal opinion, it’s lazy and uninformed personal trainers, nutritionists, medical professionals and any other health-related professional who are the ones who should be ashamed and feel stupid for not doing the work and actually help the people who come to them seeking assistance. Before I burn anymore bridges, let me go over a few of the reasons why cardio workouts for fat loss are the most overrated type of exercise known to man (followed closely by crunches).

1. Traditional cardio workouts for weight loss are a huge time waster.

When you think of cardio for weight loss, how long do you think you need to do it? Most people that I come across tend to think you need to do it for a minimum of 30 minutes and some even go so far as to say you need to do it for 60-90 minutes A DAY to get any sort of weight loss benefit. Do you really have 60 minutes of free time to devote to an ineffective cardio workout?

2. Adaptability.

Your body is very smart and it adapts to whatever form of exercise you throw at it. That’s one of the reasons you should change up your workout every few weeks, but this is especially true when it comes to cardio workouts for weight loss. Let me give you a few numbers to consider. Let’s say that you traditionally do a cardio workout for around 45 minutes 3-6 days a week and that burns roughly 400 calories. Sounds good, right? But the thing you don’t realize is that every time you do that workout, your body is adapting to that workout, which means you burn fewer and fewer calories every time you do it.

So after a few weeks time, instead of burning 400 calories, you’re burning 380. You can take that out further and say in a few months time you’re only burning around 300 calories. But how do you fix that problem? The goal is to burn more calories, not less right? To fix it, you’d either have to do your cardio for a longer period of time, or work harder in that 45 minutes. Sounds good. You can do that…but remember, you’re working harder and going longer to turn the same amount of calories you burned a few months ago, when you weren’t working as hard. Call me crazy, but I don’t think that’s the goal you’re looking for.

3. The ‘fat burning zone’ does not exist.

This is one of my favorite cardio workout for weight loss myths because it’s a pretty skewed way of looking at science. Yes, your body does burn a higher PERCENTAGE of fat in a certain heart rate, or working zone, but who cares. When I’m sitting on my butt in front of the TV, my body is burning a higher percentage of body fat than it is when I’m working my tail off doing a fat burning workout, but that doesn’t mean I’m burning more fat. The key word is ‘percentage’.

Do you want to burn a higher percentage of fat, or just more fat? If you’re like most people you just want to burn more fat and you couldn’t care less what the percentage of fat calories is to non-fat calories. To burn more fat, you have to stop doing so much low-to-moderate intensity cardio and start doing more resistance training and interval training. The resistance training shouldn’t take long and should involve lots of full body workouts and full body exercises. It should take you less than 20 minutes (hopefully around 10) so that you don’t hav any excuses for not doing it.

It should not focus on worthless exercises like triceps kickbacks, chest flies, leg extensions, biceps curls, etc. and should focus on exercises that give you more fat burning bang for your buck. So stop putting all your faith in the treadmill, elliptical trainer, stationary bike and stair-stepper and quit going right to the cardio area in the gym as soon as you walk in the door because that is not the best way to lose fat. There are far better ways than the traditional cardio workouts for weight loss that will burn fat much quicker and have you feeling better and healthier in a lot less time than most cardio addicts spend warming up.

Is Essiac Herbal Tea For Cancer Treatment and Prevention Effective?

The healing benefits of essiac tea have been a controversial topic for over 90 years. Drinking essiac herbal tea as a treatment for cancer or in conjunction with chemotherapy and radiation continues to be a very controversial subject today.

  • Slippery elm

Nurse Caisse spent the next 50 years treating others with this tea. The sheep sorrel and the burdock root are the ingredients that have been found to kill cancer cells. The turkey rhubarb root and the slippery elm bark help enhance and boost the immune system.

Nurse Caisse treated both her mother and her aunt with essiac tea, as both were diagnosed with late stage forms of cancer. Both survived and lived into their 90’s after being successfully treated with this herbal blend. Many cancer patients sought this treatment as a last effort to overcome their cancer. Many were noted to be rid of their cancer after their treatment with essiac.

In 1938, many prominent physicians in Canada supported legalization of  Nurse Caisses’ herbal tea blend. In spite of their efforts, the medical community refused to acknowledge the success of essiac tea as a treatment against cancer.

U.S. National Institute of Health, in 2008, reported that “there is not enough evidence to recommend for or against the use of  essiac herbal tea mixture as a therapy for any type of cancer.” The report went on to say that “none of the individual herbs in this herbal tea blend have been studied and tested in extensive human cancer trials.”

This four herb blend is presently being considered as a “Phase III cancer treatment”. This means that it is a strong enough treatment to assist in fighting the more moderately advanced cancers, but not strong enough to be utilized for the treatment of later stages of cancer. Of course, this does not mean that future research will not advance the level of this herbal tea to first line of treatment if results prove it a worthy opponent against cancer.

It is important to note that this herb blend is all natural and does not contain any preservatives. It is important that any individual that starts treating themselves with essiac tea, should consult their physician. Herbs, just like any medication, can cause adverse reactions or interact with other medications. Just because it is an all natural product, does not mean that it is safe when mixed with other chemicals.

Estrogen Metabolites

C2 (good) estrogens are harmless. However, C16 (bad) and C4 (ugly) estrogen metabolites are harmful and carcinogenic.
